The Hunt for the Tasmanian Tiger

The Tasmanian Tiger is thought to be extinct, but the Great Mother disagrees. She asks two native bush mice, Harry and Larry, to find the remaining Tasmanian Tigers and warn them of approaching danger. The mice brothers overhear a secret plan to cut down rainforest in the heart of the Tarkine, where the Tasmanian Tigers are thought to be hiding.

But timber-getter, Sly Hatchett, loves hunting prized animals, and his sights are firmly set on the Tasmanian Tiger. Meanwhile, a ravenous Wedge-tailed Eagle throws Harry and Larry’s mission into disarray.

Can Harry and Larry save the remaining Tasmanian Tigers before it’s too late?

My story uses a unique blend of adventure, mystery and humour that will keep young readers turning the pages, and inspire them, that a different world – is possible.

This book will appeal to readers who loved Lian Tanner’s ‘A Clue for Clara’, and her sequel, ‘Rita’s revenge’, because of the similar humour and adventure. It is also similar to Samantha Wheeler’s ‘Devils in Danger’, which encourages readers to connect with wildlife.

Book launch at Hobart bookshop

This is a short video, taken from the book launch at Hobart Bookshop on Sunday the 6th of October2024. During the launch, guest speaker Darvis Walker, discusses why it is important to connect with the beauty of nature.

My dream is that my story brings a greater awareness in society, and helps children and adults alike, remember they are a part of nature, and that our ancient rainforests are very important and need to be preserved.

Why I wrote this story;

When I moved from Queensland to Tassie in 2017, I fell in love with the beauty of the ancient rainforests and majestic mountains. However, I soon learnt that the Government didn’t care about preserving the forests. Instead, they undermined previous forestry agreements, and logged native rainforests, including habitats of critically endangered wildlife. Their disregard for protecting this delicate ecosystem appears to go unnoticed by the general public.

My dream is that my story brings a greater awareness in society, and helps children and adults alike, remember they are a part of nature, and that our native rainforests are very important and need to be saved.

There are many great organisations around Tasmania that are passionate about nature, and wildlife, such as The Bob Brown Foundation, Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, and Raptor Refuge, just to name a few.

I agree with Connor, this was a brilliant story filled with so many well-researched facts about the environmental and political landscape in Tasmania. I felt it was pitched to a slightly older audience than the previous Harry and Larry books. David has meticulously researched his subjects and I felt I learnt a lot about my home state of Tasmania while reading the book to Connor. David has a wonderful knack of presenting this information in a story-telling fashion via his loveable characters Harry and Larry so the concept of treasuring and protecting our natural environment can be relatable to a young audience. We recommend this book to any avid reader out there. While it is primarily a children’s book, the story telling has enabled us grown-ups to learn a thing or two as well!
